WORD STUDY: 8 Ways to Study The Word

8 Ways to Study The Word

STUDYING THE WORD of God sincerely, desiring to hear from him from the pages of the scripture is not so much of an easy task particularly for those who are fresh starters. There will be moments when you feel hanging out with the most important people in your life should suppress your bible study time, you may even feel there’s no time or you’re too busy or there’s so much for you to do at the office or in school (the truth is as long as you grow you’ll never get less busy, more work will come), but one thing you should never forget is the importance of the word of God in your daily life. It’s that key you need to unlock everything great God has marked out for you academically, financially and otherwise. Psalms 119:105 “Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path” NLT It’s self-explanatory, the word of God brings to light in every dark place.

Our word study time is a very vital part of our lives, and we shouldn’t tamper with it. As you consciously study God’s word and desire to stay true to it, you will grow and also glow. Our word life, is simply a proof of our love and trust in God, not just by mere words. Even if you start and you’re finding it difficult to understand anything, still go on, don’t give up so easily ( I’ve been there before) as long as you continue to study the word of God, you begin to look like him, act like him, walk in his wisdom, something significant will definitely occur and this is simply because what you follow determines what follows you. I remember vividly when I started *reading* my bible, it was in 2013 and then I read my bible not really because I wanted to, but because I felt really lonely and I just wanted to encourage myself, as a result, I’ll always *read* the book of proverbs since I loved every word in it and then I kept on because it brought me so much joy. I got so much encouragement from every passage and it gave me a new outlook about life (Note: I wasn’t so close to God then, I just needed something to make myself happy, I used the word of God as a means to a very selfish end).

I gained admission to the university in 2014, there I saw a lot of young people who proved their love for God in actions, they will study the word so much so deeply, for like 30 minutes they are still on the word. It was then I realized there were certain unique things about their lives, their love for God was so deep and it went beyond mere words. At some point I began to desire this same kind of love for God, the same zeal to stay on his word for minutes, I did not want only proverbs again. I did not desire this because I wanted to quote scriptures [nah] it was far from that, I desired it because of the wonderful promises I realized was embedded for me in his word and I wanted to prove my love for him in action. So I took it upon myself, got a devotional and a study friend that could help and also a study book I began to experience joy beyond happiness as I began the exercise and I wanted more. The first semester was over and I was so eager to go home and share my experience with my family, I even decided that when I got home I would finish a particular book of the bible {lol) but too bad it didn’t go that way for me. When I got home, for the first two weeks I kept to my decision and after that, it became a struggle for me because I got distracted and I made my own plans without committing it to God, I wanted to go ahead of him and his word to me per-time. Guys, I didn’t know it wasn’t that way, God doesn’t work that way, he is patient to teach, kind, and ever loving. The thing is even if you stick to a particular chapter for a whole month, God is not angry about that he just wants us to be with him and reverence him at every moment, his love is everlasting never fading. Sticking to a chapter for a whole month is not bad, do not rush things remember his word is new every morning, so regardless don’t rush your word study life, when it’s time he prompts you to move further, let him lead you don’t make the mistake I made.

In the year 2015, I made up my mind to let God lead me I wasn’t going to do things with my head alone anymore but also I was going to engage my heart. It’s 2017 now three years ago and when I started, there have been ups and downs along the way, fainting but God has been faithful and loving because each time I was drifting, He’ll call my attention back and I’ll adjust. CHOOSE TO GET CLOSER TO GOD BY STUDYING HIS WORD.

1. Pick a time of the day to study the word. Could be in the morning, afternoon or before going to bed.

2. Choose a way to study the word. (Chronologically or thematically(love, joy, peace)).

3. Get a devotional, and a bible study book.

4. Talk to God before you start studying the word, ask him to speak to you and give you understanding

5. Don’t read the bible like a book but study it. Remember, the letter kills but it’s the spirit in the word that gives life.

6. Once you’ve studied the word, choose a particular verse that’s easy to memorize and ensure you memorize it.

7. Once you’re done ask him for grace to continue studying his word and the grace to apply the word you read to your daily life.

8. Start small. 10 minutes is okay with time you’ll grow If you have difficulty in doing this, get a study partner it would help and if you choose a particular time to study make sure you keep it, do not procrastinate if you need to make any adjustments due to urgent needs ensure its not so far from your study time and above all let there be a desire within you to grow and learn something you.
